9th April 2010 - The Mileage Company, operators of Airmiles, the UK's leading travel rewards scheme, is pleased to announce its new partnership with the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT), the leading conservation organisation saving wetlands for wildlife and people across the world.
Through its Airmiles travel rewards scheme, The Mileage Company is donating £40,685.50 to support environmental projects such as saving the Madagascar pochard, the world's rarest duck from extinction and other conservation breeding programmes undertaken by WWT.
WWT raises awareness of the issues that affect the survival of wetlands and wildlife. Through its network of nine specialist wetland visitor centres in the UK, the WWT inspire people through learning and being close to nature.
Furthermore, the work by the WWT is vital for the environment. Wetlands need to be conserved for wildlife but also for their role as important carbon stores helping to slow down climate change.
The Mileage Company donation to WWT is the result of two of Airmiles' environmentally friendly customer initiatives; where members send in their old mobile 'phones which are reconditioned and reused in developing countries, instead of ending up in landfill, and shopping via Airmiles Eco Shop for sustainable products like eco-kettles and organic beauty products . For both these initiatives Airmiles members collect miles and the profits are donated to two partner charities, the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust and Rainforest Concern.
Andrew Swaffield, Managing Director, The Mileage Company, operators of Airmiles, said: "We take our responsibility for the environment very seriously. Airmiles customers tell us they love travel but would like help in reducing their carbon footprint along the way. Our mobile 'phone recycling and Eco Shop initiatives mean that Airmiles customers can make a significant contribution to environmental projects. And we're delighted to donate profits from these initiatives to the vital conservation work by Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust and Rainforest Concern."
John Creedon, Corporate Relations Manager, Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, said: "We are very pleased to receive such a generous donation from the Airmiles scheme, towards our conservation and education work. It's really exciting to receive this boost to our funds, particularly in this, the International Year of Biodiversity."
The United Nations declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity. It is a celebration of life on earth and the value of biodiversity in our lives.

WWT is a leading UK conservation organisation saving wetlands for wildlife and people across the world. With over 60 years experience of wetland conservation, WWT is committed to the protection of wetlands and all that depend on them for survival.
One conservation project by the WWT is saving the Madgascar pochard, the world's rarest duck, from extinction. In 2008 the WWT together with the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and Peregrine Fund launched a major project with the Government of Madagascar to save this rare species. WWT operates nine specialist wetland visitor centres in the UK that are visited by some one million people every year from around the world. The centres provide a place to walk, relax, learn, and get closer to nature. Over 60,000 children benefit every year from educational visits to a WWT centre.
In total over 2,000 hectares are managed by WWT, including seven Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), one Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI), six Special Protection Areas (SPA), Part of one Marine Nature Reserve and six Ramsar sites, supporting over 200,000 waterbirds.
WWT members enjoy free access to all nine visitor centres and are kept up to date with developments through a quarterly magazine.
Rainforest Concern is a Registered Charity in the UK, established to protect threatened natural habitats and the biodiversity they contain, together with the indigenous people who still depend on them for survival.
The world's tropical rainforests are the richest and most diverse habitats on earth. They represent a vast reservoir of knowledge and contain a wealth of ecosystems and wildlife, with many species still undiscovered.
