  • 1988

    • Airmiles is founded with a 51% stake by British Airways. It gains a database of three million collectors in its first three months
    • Airmiles launches its financial partner, NatWest
    • Airmiles secures big-name collection partners including Shell, who are still partners of The Mileage Company today
  • 1994

    • Airmiles is fully acquired by British Airways plc
  • 2000

    • Airmiles introduces flexible redemption options - miles, cash and part miles/part cash
  • 2002

    • Airmiles launches new supermarket partner, Tesco, who are still partners of The Mileage Company today
  • 2003

    • airmiles.co.uk becomes a transactional site - offering an online booking facility
  • 2005

    • airmiles.co.uk launches online shopping
  • 2007

    • Airmiles unveils new collection partner Lloyds TSB, launching with its co-branded Duo credit card
    • Airmiles introduces free flights and Zone fares – including airline taxes, fees and surcharges. It maintained price levels until 2011, despite oil price fluctuations
  • 2008

    • Lloyds TSB begins offering the Lloyds TSB Airmiles Mortgage
    • Airmiles starts to run the commercial aspects of British Airways' frequent flyer programme, British Airways' Executive Club, globally
  • 2009

    • British Airways launches an exclusive partnership with Avis
    • The Mileage Company launches
  • 2011

    • Avios launches – replacing the Airmiles scheme in the UK. It launched not just as a programme, but also as a shared reward currency with Iberia and British Airways.
